The history of climbing and alpinism on the Dachstein started at the beginning of the 19th century, the dates of the first ascent vary between 1819 and 1834. Fact is that in 1843 the first via ferrata in the Alps was built on the Dachstein under the guidance of the famous Viennese geographer Prof. Friedrich Simony.
In 1909, the legendary first ascent of the 800 m vertical Dachstein south wall was made by the Steiner brothers, Franz & Georg from Ramsau. Today many exposed free routes and 22 via ferratas await the enthusiastic climber!
